When I was around 10 or 11 I went exploring in my neighborhood across the street from where I lived. We were two blocks from the Chicago city limit, so it was rare we had an empty lot we called the prairie. It was a great place to play whiffleball, which I did for hours. This was just a normal vacant house lot full of weeds. There was a pool table building factory in front of it, where I once watched Minnesota Fats of movie fame put on an exhibition. ( I think he was a little sauced because he missed most of his shots!) Behind the houses was an alley way that never had been paved, so people would throw their lawn cuttings in this lightly wooded lane. It was there that I discovered my first beehive under the grass cuttings.
