Victory Over My Flesh
As I study the Psalms, one of the strongest truths of the Bible becomes evident: Our flesh longs to be satisfied. It rebels against the rule of God. Our heart is corrupt and will manipulate, deceive, and lie to get its way. It will even use God and religion to disguise its intentions. In the Name of God much evil has been done.
The Good News is there is a greater truth that surpasses our flesh: God has made a provision for forgiveness so the heart can be surrendered to God, the flesh can be dealt with God’s Way, and we can live lives of victory in the Messiah.
This truth is expressed to us in the context of God’s love, His holiness and righteousness, and in the coming Messiah. Nothing is more powerful than God’s love for us. This truth balances the holiness and righteousness that God will not compromise. This revelation of God will come in its fullness in the Person of the Messiah.
In John 1, we are told Jesus is full of God’s grace, truth, and glory. He is THE WAY, THE TRUTH AND THE LIFE. HE IS THE I AM OF THE OLD COVENANT. NOW HE COMES TO GIVE US THE NEW COVENANT. God’s love, holiness, righteousness, truth, and grace become real to us in Jesus and ultimately His death on the cross for us, dieing in our place for our sins. This is the zenith of His glory.
The Resurrection validates these truths. For in the Resurrection God does in Jesus what no one can do. He does the impossible by rising from the dead. This miracle confirms God’s love, His holiness and righteousness, and that we are no longer slaves to our flesh, but sin and death have been conquered. All who will repent and believe will know this freedom in the blood covenant of Jesus Christ.
So, when we are weak in our flesh, look not to the Law, but to Jesus Christ. “Come to Me and I will give you rest for your soul.” I am alive in Christ. I am no longer dead in my sin. Sin has no dominion over me. I yield my self to God in Christ Jesus. I am now a slave to righteousness and the fruit of that is holiness.
In this life, no matter how strong my flesh cries out and even causes me to sin, there is no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus, who walk according to the Spirit and not the flesh. I am a son/daughter of God. I am an heir with Christ. I am led by the Spirit and NOTHING can separate me from the love of God in Christ Jesus.
The Psalms speak of this marvelous truth and point to the ONE Who will embody this truth and grace of God in His holiness and righteousness. Only One has ever lived a life like Jesus and only One could fulfill the Law of God. In Him I have salvation. Praise God, because my flesh reminds me daily how strong it is in rebellion against God. In Christ I learn to serve and love the living God and I am eternally grateful for His free gift of forgiveness and everlasting life.
